Moving Forward in Belonging: Engaging Willie James Jennings’ “After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging”

When: June 8, 2023, 1:45 pm - Thursday

Where: Stone Chapel

Session 4

Session Abstract

After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging, challenges individuals and institutions of higher learning not just to think through issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, but to consider the very purposes of higher learning, both in universities and institutions focused on theological training. Jennings’ critique is simultaneously sweeping and personal, idealistic and practical. It compels us to consider how we have been formed and how educational institutions continue to form students, faculty, and administrators in the twin shadows of colonialism and racial capitalism. The assembled panel will help the audience think through how to take steps forward in engaging Jennings’ arguments at our institutions.
