Session 5

Session Abstract

A Life of Alexander Campbell comprises the first critical biography of the Restorationist minister and Stone-Campbell Movement co-founder. In this book, Doug Foster explores and assesses Campbell’s monumental significance in reform Christianity, both in the United States and globally. From the formation and crafting of Campbell’s theology of restoration, to his teachings on the nature of Christian unity, to conflicts outside the Stone-Campbell movement and turning points within the fellowship, to the collision of Campbell’s millennialism with the American Civil War, Foster provides a crucial context for understanding Campbell’s role “at the heart of the American religious story.” This session will review the book’s argument and importance from a variety of religious and historical contexts.
