When: June 8, 2023, 9:00 am - Thursday
Where: Balliol
Session 3
Session Abstract
In an earlier book and this new collection of essays David Moffitt challenges traditional assumptions about sacrifice and views of atonement that tend to focus solely on Jesus’s death. Drawing also on recent scholarship on Leviticus, Moffitt argues that in sacrifice and atonement there is a fuller process. The atoning work of Jesus also involves his resurrection, ascension, offering in the heavenly sanctuary as priest, and ongoing intercession. In Rethinking the Atonement Moffitt offers further fruit of his work on Hebrews, as well as other New Testament passages. Three panelists will respond to the book, followed by the author’s reply.
