Everett Ferguson Lecture Early Christian Studies

Augustine’s Gradual Assembly of an Exploration of the Efficacy of the Baptismal Ritual

When: June 7, 2023, 4:15 pm - Wednesday

Where: Malamat

Session 2

Session Abstract

The affirmation that one and the same Christian baptism is conferred and received by washing and the invocation of the divine names has become a foundation for mutual recognition and respect among diverse communities and a basis for their seeking appropriate unity. This belief was not always affirmed and accepted in Christian teaching and practice; it was developed through conflict and controversy.  This paper will trace the stages in which Augustine provided a doctrinal explanation for a disputed dogma.
