Session Abstract

All theology is contextual theology by necessity. It is always birthed out of engagement and dialogue with particular cultural contexts. Christian orthodoxy and historical theology, seen from this perspective, represent a series of contextual theologies. Such theologies shape the social imagination and practice of churches in their contexts. In this lecture we will discuss a contextual theology of care for survivors of spiritual abuse and religious trauma—those who have been harmed by the American church. We will explore the missiological and theological method that informs this theology as well as practices and postures of care that flow from it. What emerges is a trauma-informed practice of evangelism that seeks to respond in loving and healing ways to its neighbors who have experienced spiritual abuse and religious trauma.
