American Religion

A Case Study of a Church of Christ Congregation Through the Lens of Anthropology

When: June 8, 2023, 3:30 pm - Thursday

Where: Pembroke

Session 5

Session Abstract

This session explores an American Church of Christ congregation that serves as emblematic of cultural changes in ways of religious knowing. Sam Victor’s recently completed dissertation, titled “The Ethics of Knowing: Epistemic Virtue at an Ex-Literalist Church in Nashville,” is an ethnographic study that places a Church of Christ congregation at the center of broader shifts in cultural and ethical understanding. Respondents from different disciplinary backgrounds provide the basis of an interdisciplinary session that places Victor’s own field of Social Anthropology in conversation with Philosophy, Theology, and Communication. Respondents will draw out implications of particular relevance to scholars at the CSC.
