Session Abstract
American policy-makers have historically been squeamish about religion’s role in the public sphere. Despite their hesitancy to confront the realities of overlapping church (or mosque) and state in foreign policy, understanding the complex dynamics of religion plays a more crucial role than ever in diplomacy. Shaun A. Casey, the founding director of the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs, makes a compelling case for the necessity of understanding global religion in Chasing the Devil at Foggy Bottom. Reviews will address the work from different vantage points, with the author’s response and audience interaction.
