Confession and Repentance: Understanding Christian Calls for Racial Justice and a Beloved Community in the American Church and Academy

When: June 9, 2022, 9:00 am - Thursday

Where: Ezell 357

Session 3

Session Abstract

Recent discourse on race and racism in the United States, including debates about Critical Race Theory, has become ever more polarized. This age of transition demands careful, critical, constructive inquiry and exchange, yet many voices rely on proxies, shibboleths, and strawmen in institutional, political, theological, and social rhetoric and praxis. This generative session will assess scriptural, theological, and theoretical calls for justice and inclusion and will explore contemporary movements and obstacles for racial justice in American churches and universities. A companion roundtable session will follow later in the conference to expand and advance the ideas in this session.
