Session Abstract
In The Grace of Troublesome Questions, Richard Hughes shares his life-long quest to make sense of three entangled, exclusivist narratives: the message of the one true church, the narrative of the United States as God’s chosen people, and the pervasive notion of White supremacy. These three claims sharply defined the world of his youth, and Hughes came to see that none of them squared with the teachings of the Christian faith. His scholarly career has been defined by challenging these notions, and this panel will offer a review of The Grace of Troublesome Questions and the clear and compelling vocation that has guided Hughes’s work.
