J. J. M. Roberts’ Lecture in Old Testament Studies, “Four Questions From Jonah”
When: June 9, 2021, 1:00 pm - Wednesday
Where: Shamblin Theater
Session 1
Session Abstract
This paper will discuss one question arising from each of Jonah’s four chapters. Each question highlights a peculiar feature of the book or story of Jonah. The paper will argue that these questions point to the need for different scholarly approaches in analyzing Jonah. The four approaches that will be underscored are source criticism, literary (metaphor) appreciation, textual criticism, and animal studies. The paper will show that scholars have tended to overlook the significance of these approaches for the critical study and appreciation of Jonah.
